Services

AMBULATORY SERVICE

We provide consultations on your property with most of our equipment being able to be mobile and used in the field. This can range from routine procedures such as wormings, teeth rasping, vaccinations, and routine lameness evaluation to more serious calls for cuts, colic and foalings. Bookings can be made by ringing our office during the day, preferably the day before you would like a visit. We also provide a 24 hour emergency service. Our practice radius is quite extensive, covering areas such as Bilpin, Colo Heights, South Maroota, Berrilee, Kellyville, Kemps Creek, Mulgoa. However, where a more comprehensive range of facilities and equipment is required, we encourage you to bring your horse to our hospital.

EMERGENCY

HEVC provides a 24 hours a day, 7 days a week emergency service to our clients for their horses and alpacas. This is provided through a paging service, which can be accessed by ringing our business number  (02) 4577 4611 at any time.

LAMENESS

HEVC provides extensive lameness examinations, both in the field and at our clinic. We endeavour to establish the cause and site of your horse’s lameness to correctly treat the problem. We utilise additional aids such as ultrasonic tendon scans, nerve blocks and x-rays, as well as being able to refer for nuclear scintigraphy.

We also work closely with several local farriers to enable appropriate corrective shoeing.

 IMAGING

Imaging is our primary non-invasive diagnostic procedure. It is vital to the investigation and diagnosis of many processes such as lameness, upper respiratory problems and reproductive procedures.

The practice operates 4 portable X-ray machines, 5 Ultrasound machines and 2 endoscopes, including one recently purchased video-endoscope.

PRE-PURCHASE EXAMINATIONS

Pre-purchase examinations are recommended whenever purchasing an animal. HEVC is able to provide an extensive examination in accordance with Australian Equine Veterinary Association guidelines.

There is also the option of requesting a more comprehensive work-up for areas of concern utilising x-rays, endoscopy or ultrasound.  Drug screening is available at the purchaser’s request.

SURGERY

We perform a comprehensive range of procedures such as arthroscopy and orthopaedic surgery, upper respiratory procedures and colic surgery.

Tony Drew performs most of our routine surgery, as well as colic operations. We also engage the services of specialist surgeons, including Dr Nicholas Kannegieter, for most complicated orthopaedic and ophthalmic procedures.

Our surgery is state-of-the-art with a hydraulic operating table and two fully padded recovery boxes.

MEDICINE

We are proud to be classified as an A-Grade hospital. Our hospital is under the direction of Tony Drew, who has completed his membership exams in Equine Internal Medicine. Our hospital is able to provide intensive care to critical animals with our two specially equipped intensive care stables. We are also able to cater for intensive neonatal care with our special mare and foal stables.

LABORATORY

As an A-Grade hospital HEVC is the only local practice to provide an on-site laboratory. The laboratory contains modern equipment operated by a qualified laboratory technician with over 15 years experience. This allows quick turn-around times for results, allowing more rapid diagnosis and the formation of treatment regimes.

REPRODUCTION

HEVC is able to provide the latest techniques in reproduction, such as the use of chilled and frozen semen as well as embryo transfers. Our staff have a great expertise in reproductive work, with some having over 30 years of experience.

We have a specially designed reproductive laboratory to provide all the diagnostic work associated with your breeding plans. Our practice is able to provide the latest frozen semen and embryo transfer techniques, with one of our repro vets completing training under the guidance of one of the leading veterinary reproductive specialists in the USA.

We are able to store your stallions semen in a safe and secure environment with regular contracted liquid nitrogen servicing. HEVC also has available a jump mare, as well as an artificial 'dummy mare' to ensure the safe and successful collection of your stallion.
